It’s critical to identify the sort of scars you have before attempting any treatment. Different types react differently to different therapies, and some treatments work better for some types than for others.
Furthermore, skin tone may also have a role. For instance, higher skin laser treatments are not advised for darker skin types because of the increased risk of pigmentation and scarring.
Acne is defined by medical professionals as “a persistent inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous unit caused by increased sebum production, altered keratinization, inflammation, and Propionibacterium acnes bacterial colonisation of hair follicles induced by androgen.
Simply put, acne is brought on by an overabundance of sebum (oil) in the hair follicles, which explains why it primarily affects the face, neck, chest, and back, areas with high densities of sebaceous glands and hair follicles.
Types of acne scar
Atrophic scars
. These scars show themselves as tiny skin marks.
. Tiny scars that resemble pinpricks are known as icepick scars.
. Larger, clearly defined marks are known as boxcar scars.
. Undefined edges characterise rolling scars, which give the skin a wavy or rolling look.
They arise from insufficient fibroblast production by the skin during the healing phase. Cells called fibroblasts are essential for the synthesis of collagen and the healing of wounds.
Hypertrophic scars
As the acne scar heals, an excessive number of fibroblasts are produced by the skin, leading to a raised scar.
Keloid scars
Though typically thicker than the original acne spot, these resemble hypertrophic scars. They are frequently darker than the surrounding skin due to hyperpigmentation. They could be brown or red. Pain or itching could also be present.
